Food for thought

Looking at my body, and understanding that I'm a composite of living cells, a self-replicating organism, needing food intake, air to breathe, in order to regenerate, a quite complex ensemble of body parts - a brain, a heart, a stomach, a complete digestive system ... that needs to be nourished, cleaned, taken care of, and entertained.

What are mood, emotions, feelings, anxiety, fear - for this body?
What are concepts, ideas, philosophical questioning - from the point of view of the stomach?

Why is my fingernails growing, why do I have hair growth?
What becomes of my dead skin cells?
Are these clipped fingernails - still me?

A hair is attached to my head, and then cut a fall down - am I on the floor - from the point of view of the cell in my former hair?

What is all this?
and what is Death?

Mass and energy

I may have said that the Universe was made of energy - but actually the Universe is made up of two things : particles and energy.

Let's first delve into particles.

There are two types of particles, fermions and bosons.

Fermions are what we call matter. They have all the properties we normally associate with matter, like having mass and taking up space. Two fermions cannot be in the same place at the same time. Scientifically, a fermion is any particle that has half integer spin.

Bosons are also particles, and they have whole integer spin. Bosons are particles, but don't behave like matter at all. A whole bunch of them can be in the same place at the same time. For instance, the most "famous" boson is the photon, the light particle. As a rule, bosons are the "mediator" particles: photons are responsible for electromagnetic force, gravitons for gravity, etc.

Both fermions and bosons are particles, only fermions are matter. It turns out, a property of particles is that most particles have mass (except for the photon, the only massless particle).

Thus all the fermions have mass, this is one of their properties.
Making up the other half of the universe (well, in fact a lot more than half. There is a lot more energy than matter out there, but I regress) is energy.

Start playing D&D

Back in the days

When I have been introduced to role playing games, back in the 90s - it was like I've discovered a portal to an infinities of new worlds.

I remembered listening to one guy in my class explaining with a lot of gestures the adventure he had on the week end.

Then it has became an priority for me to be initiated into that role playing experience.

First contact

But it wasn't easy, I remembered - back then the dungeon master guide (DMG), monster manual (MM) and player hand book (PHB) were a bit expensive for students, also we gathered the money and started playing with a group of people. It was really fun. But then at first, it was tough because unless you had an experienced player (usually the DM) giving instructions, we didn't know what to do ?! the engine of this game is imagination and initiative, the rest is just structure given by the rules, but when I had to prepare my first game as a DM - I felt a bit lost and kept reading and reading DMG parts that I never had to use (adventure in city, how the guild works, etc ...)

Now I guess it doesn't make much sense, with the plethora of video games ; once you've understood the character creation part and the set of keys to use  - you are set for the game.

Video games killed the RPG Star

Role playing game isn't a big market now, because of the preparation time it requires, it takes a lot of work (compared to the basic video game) before you can assemble a team of players and start an adventure.

Another thing is to find a group of player that will be able to come regularly to session - otherwise it's not very enjoyable in the long run.

But since once again the motor of the role playing game is imagination and initiative ; for the connoisseurs the gratification of a good session is thousands times better than grinding on a video game. My advice is start playing D&D you'll develop a lot of very useful skills like imagination, initiative, empathy, acting, inventiveness, interactivity, organization, story-telling, entertainment, leading, and it's a good way to make friends.

If anybody is interested in discovering role playing I'd recommend this page ; it gives good advices.

Some friends and I want to start playing D&D. What to buy, what to do now?

World of Illusions

What is an illusionist ?

From the excellent d20 website it's a wizard variant that has this ability to distort realities, to mass charm people into believing what he wants.

It really has no "real" power - and therefor some players are wondering why even play an illusionist compared to a mighty paladin, ferocious barbarian or skilled ranger ?

Benefits of playing an illusionist

But the fact is the illusionist is introducing really interesting new parameter in the game.
He can scare a lot of people, by creating illusion of a stone giant in the busy market place of a tiny village, then the rogue can take advantage of this situation by looting all shops.
He can make the entire party becomes invisible, he can create distractions when the party is heavily wounded and has nowhere to hide.

The illusionist can also be used as a king adviser to keep the population quiet, by creating intrigues and plot - so the king can mass-control his subjects.

An illusion is an unquestioned belief.

When a party knows that an illusionist is there - everybody is regularly making saving-throw ; that's the only way to go with these

What does that have to do with spiritual growth?

Our Ego is a master illusionist, he has this capacity of distorting realities, sending false signals, and decoy all over the place when you start to get serious in your spiritual growth.

Doing Shadow work is a nice way to avoid falling in the traps the Ego is setting.

For every thought the exercise is to ask the 4 questions (see "The Work" by Byron Katie) - is it true ? can you absolutely know that it's true ? How do you feel when you believe this thought ? How would you be without this thought ?

And perform a couple of "turn-around" to see this thought through different lights.

I spontaneously do this while I'm awake during the night, and this had an impact on the dream I had. The results are real, at first emotionally it's quite vivid.

But as far as I can see now, the emotional roller-coaster is just a physical reaction to the loss of the unquestioned belief, but it doesn't have to be the goal to look for - it feels good crying when you realize how badly you had rooted a core-belief, but the crying or laughter aren't important - the work is.

Shadow work

Watching and re-watching Teal Scott videos is tremendously beneficial ; her series is very rich and informative but also very dense - so when I stumbled a couple of times on the term "doing your shadow work" ; it took me a while to really accept that exercise as something really vital for spiritual progression.

Then during this particular lecture on "The fastest way to find happiness" Teal is mentioning Byron Katie. And then postulate that there's nothing more dangerous than an unquestioned thought.

Now, like said in a previous post, I'm trying to have an  out of body experience, and so far I'm not successful at it. The best I could do what lucid dreaming for a very short time.

Doing shadow work means confronting our resistances, our fears, our painful thoughts ...

And that's usually the last thing we want to do, because first hand it looks like it's going to be challenging. But after doing a few sessions of shadow work (either with Teal's method or Katie's method) it actually feels liberating (and also had an impact during dreams).

Since our mind is creating our reality, and our mind is influenced by thoughts ; it is quite important to be able to question what we are accepting in our mind. If you know the saying "garbage in - garbage out", you know how this could turn out.

Teal Scott's method -  is detailed in her video.
Katie Byron's method - called "the work" is going through a series of four questions called "the inquiry" (more details on her website).

After doing shadow work, what previously felt like a sour painful memory is now becoming a friendly thought, that helped understanding and accepting oneself.

Role playing Enlightenment

I'm currently trying to return to a good role playing game, I found many system like d20, gurps, fudge, fate, d6, etc ... some manuals are even available for free as pdf.
But after reading a few pages, it usually comes to this :
- a list of class and characters to choose from
- a list of skills that will get better as you level up
- various table (combat, magic spell, etc ...)
- a list of monsters
- a list of spells
And after reading this I feel a bit disappointed - is there a role playing game that is about enlightenment and love ?
Because eventually the only monster we have to fight is in ourselves.
The only enemy is within, and confronting him is starting the shadow work.

Thinking about the succession of "opening a door / fighting the monster / taking the treasure / Leaving the room" - There is the caricature of this endless variations of the same trick we play on ourselves finding an obstacle, overcoming the problem, getting the reward and looking for another issue...

What I don't like about current role playing game is the "dark violent" part - the self righteousness of the good heroes mass killing the villains, while in fact there is a lot more benefits in finding ways around violence. What if you start capturing the villains ?
What if you start converting them, showing them that their way is destructive ?

And one day Enlightenment.

That's a lot more difficult that slashing the dragon with a two edged sword. Which will inevitably make you level up and the next day will arrive with two dragons to fight, and then 3 and even if the gold coins are pouring, the gems and the magic items ... you'll feel empty and tired of the game after a while.

And some dark night you will be there as Conan on his throne contemplating the skulls of his enemy and wonder about the ultimate goal of this fruitless race for glory ?

Why ?

The answer is within, inside ... where lie this shadow that has never been confronted. Meet your shadow self dear Conan, it has grown though, with every monsters you slayed...the shadow got larger and larger.

"Isis Unveiled": H.P. Blavatsky's First Book: Many men have arisen who had glimpses of the truth, and fancied they had it all. Such have failed to achieve the good they might have done and sought to do, because vanity has made them thrust their personality into such undue prominence as to interpose it between their believers and the whole truth that lay behind. The world needs no sectarian church, whether of Buddha, Jesus, Mahomet, Swedenborg, Calvin, or any other. There being but ONE Truth, man requires but one church -- the Temple of God within us, walled in by matter but penetrable by any one who can find the way; the pure in heart see God.

Life after birth

There's an interesting paradigm shift story :
In the belly of a pregnant woman were two babies. One asks the other:
- Do you believe in life after birth?
- Of course. Something must exist after delivery. Maybe we're here because we need to prepare for what will be later.
- Nonsense! There is no life after birth. What would that life be like?
- I do not know, but surely there will be more light than here. Maybe we walk on our own feet and nourish us through the mouth.
- This is absurd! Walking is impossible. And eat by mouth? That is ridiculous! The umbilical cord is where we eat. I tell you one thing: life after delivery is excluded. The umbilical cord is too short.- Well, I think there must be something. And maybe it's just a bit different from what we are used to in here.
- But no one has ever returned from beyond postpartum. Delivery is the end of life. And after all, life is but a harrowing existence in the darkness that leads nowhere.- Well, I do not know exactly how it will be after delivery, but sure we'll see Mom and she'll take care of us.
- Mom? Do you believe in Mom? And where do you think she is?- Where ? All around us! In it and through it is how we live. Without it the whole world would not exist.
- Well, I do not think so! I've never seen Mom , therefore, it is logical that she doesn't exists.
- Well, but sometimes when we are silent, you can hear her singing or feel she caresses our world. You know? ... I think there is a real life that awaits us and that we are only now getting ready for her ...

Oligarchy of the brutal kind

In role playing the GM has a duty of entertaining the players. That's a given, but ultimately the players are the one making the game fun or not.
The GM will provide a plot, something to launch the campaign - starting a quest.

Example of quest :
- a legendary item has been stolen, your group is asked to retrieve it
- a convoy has to go in another town and has to cross into a dangerous territory ; the group has to defend the convoy
- a recurring villain has kidnapped a princess and the group has to rescue her
- a member of the team has been poisoned, cursed, been hypnotized and the group has to find the antidote, cure, etc...
- a dragon has been spotted over a village, the group has been paid by the villagers to protect their village
- a member of the team has been kidnapped and will be forced to fight into an arena ; the rest of the group has to rescue him or her.
- basically it's all about retrieving items, protecting an area, or rescuing each other.

But the player are the best during the game to generate sub-plot, and the GM well planned campaign can really go in another direction.

The constant fight between good and evil is always the basic plot - but usually the dichotomy starts to become blurry as soon as the players are putting their agenda into it.

At some stage, it looks like there are various possibilities for the "Good" (defending the villagers, rescuing the princess, exploring the cave, etc ...), even though the good are supposed to work together and be united, usually the group get divides on what to do. Think of the Lord of the Ring, the team had to split after the Moria.

But on the Evil side, it's even more possibilities, because potentially each villain can have his own agenda, may it be the search for eternal life, for the ultimate power, for the complete domination of the world, etc ...

Which means that even if the "Good"  party has been defeated, the villains will be fighting each other, using treason, treachery, assassination, lies, etc ...

From a lawful good prospective, the villain is a tumour that has to be eradicated - because once it's planted somewhere, it will put havoc and will spread.

Now humanly, the only way to fight evil is to understand its root.

The lawful good mentality will generate more wars, and dramas that will in turn prepare the next generation of villains, because the show must go on - this is tolerated by the GM ; it will supply an endless number of future campaigns.

In old school role playing the plot isn't to turn the villains into a friend, to convert him by making him realize his actions are destructive and pointless...
To prove him that he's on the path of destruction, his own destruction - because of his fear to be judge, his fear of losing control, his need of power.

What is destruction ?

When the "good guy" and the villain will eventually kill each other - when the last combat will be over.

Then something new can start over.

And that's what it's all about - this has to come to a point of the final confrontation.

Think about Ragnarok now and ponder on it for a while.
Lecture: The Work of Secret Societies in the World: This levelling-out process will bring war and bloodshed in its train — war in the shape of economic strife among nations, pressure for expansion, suppression in every form, strife in the sphere of investment and profit, industrial undertakings, and so forth. And by adopting certain measures it will increasingly be possible to handle vast masses of people by sheer force; the individual will acquire greater and greater power over certain masses of the people. For the course of evolution is leading, not towards greater democracy, but towards oligarchy of the brutal kind, in that the power of the single individual will immeasurably increase. If morals are not ennobled, this will lead to brutality in every possible form. This state of things will come, just as the great water-catastrophe came to the Atlanteans.

That song

There was a song I listened secretly while I was back at the desk job I hated and quit years ago ; that song is (up until now) filling my spine with shivering pleasure, it fills me with focused calm, with cold determination.

It reminds me, that somehow we can be very close one another, but be very lonely in our small cubicle.

2012 is over, we can feel a veil is lifting - the old paradigm is losing his grip on our life - many people are awakening to the new vibrations.

But somehow reading more Rudolf Steiner materials I suspect some more tumults.

Lecture: The Work of Secret Societies in the World: It is impossible to conceive what might happen in such circumstances if mankind has not, by then, reached selflessness. The attainment of selflessness alone will enable humanity to be kept from the brink of destruction. The downfall of our present epoch will be caused by lack of morality. The Lemurian epoch was destroyed by fire, the Atlantean by water; our epoch and its civilisation will be destroyed by the War of All against All, by evil. Human beings will destroy each other in mutual strife. And the terrible thing — more desperately tragic than other catastrophes — will be that the blame will lie with human beings themselves.

Optimal Solution

May 2013 be the Year, where and when we make Friends with ourselves.

May this be that Year.

There's nothing beyond the present moment, and the self realization of the All.

When you realize you are an ego - a separate part of the Universe - and therefore are able to say "I am" - then you also have this ability to speak to yourself, and be friend with yourself.

There's nobody else but you. It's only because of you.

A Modern View: The Discipline of the Optimal Solution: Consider this concept: Take a blank piece of paper. Make a pinhole in it. That is the model for all knowledge, all understanding, all the Universes...

Living Enlightenment

First Samadhi Experience of Nithyananda

Aeon

Creating worlds, Universes ... that's what a game master has to do, before he can start inviting players for campaigning. Of course some Universes are offered as ready to use, like Tolkien Universe, Star Wars Universe, Forgotten realms, World of Warcraft, Michael Morcook Elric, Fritz Leiber Fafhrd and the Grey  mouser etc ... but the hard core game masters are the one who are creating their own Universes, Gary Gigax created Greyhawk and many legends and lore.

Today we are fed by the media into thinking that our world is about to end. To the extent of making 2012 the year of the Apocalypse ; which it is of course. The Year of the great revelation, the year when we start to open our eyes.

The miracle is to believe that we can create our own world, our own Universe, just like the game masters.

There is the world we see, and the unseen worlds.

There is the actions we see and the unseen actions.

We are all in a "dream" - but funnily enough when we think of dreaming we automatically think of an etheric realms because that's our daily experience of what dreaming is ... while actually it's the other way around, the dream is the sluggish materialistic part of our life that began at birth and end at death - that's the dream, the unreal part is the part we think is real and vice verse. We are dreamed, when we die we wake up as the dreamer.

The moment you realize you can change things in your dream, is a pivotal moment. It happened to me a while ago, and the consequences are unfolding slowly but surely.

Thoughts are creating realities, even here in the material world, it just takes longer (2 or 3 months for something as basic as wanting a material object) - but it's instantaneous in dreams.

Now since there's no limit - where do we begin ?

Middle Way

When confronted with evil during a campaign, players are easy to use the sword, and cast spells - than to think it over.

what is the origin of evil, why does evil exists in the first place isn't the type of question your paladin, rangers and cleric would ask themselves... they'll just plunge their sword, throw their battle axe or smash their hammer on the head of the offender than to ask philosophical questions.

And that's pretty much why all role playing games are about fighting and sharing treasure afterwards.

But when neutral people such as druids or monks comes along  and add a balance in that constant fight between good and evil - then it gets a lot more interesting.

Why would a neutral character enter a fight ? for him good characters are just hot tempered for something that won't last - and evil characters are just obviously misguided - neutral characters know that it is of no importance and while the battle are coming, trees will be destroyed, people will die, widows and orphans are going to be made...

A neutral character knows that there is no winner or loser in these silly wars.

But somehow they would make alliance for short period of time, to shorten the damages. Neutral people are wise.

When you are playing a lawful good paladin, you see the neutral druid as a coward hippie with secular traditions - when you are a chaotic evil assassin you see the neutral druid as a potentially dangerous ally of the civilized establishment.

The evil dragon is only caring about his treasure, and would defend it against anybody - evil character included.

The evil necromancer would be only interested in gaining power and probably immortality - and would then attack anybody.

Because although the good characters in roleplay see cooperation as beneficial and wouldn't turn unto a friend, evil characters are very versatile and won't see any shame in treason. That's where game masters have a tough time when players are playing evil characters because the campaign will inevitably end up in a blood bath.

Choosing evil is the fastest way to shorten the life of your character.

While the good guy are struggling they have a better survival chance - technically because of the cooperation that they are willing to be bound with.

But eventually the good and the bad guy are always finding each other - while the neutral are actually the one building things that will endure.

Understanding that beyond good or evil, there is respect for life.

Why do you think the archetype of the druid is an old guy with a white beard ? that's because he has seen many battles, but from a distance.

Magician

Magicians and illusionists are in Role playing Games, the weak esoteric character that everybody likes to fight against but are scarcely playing.

Why ?

In Role Playing Games, playing a magician is a terrible experience, when you start you have essentially one spell, and very little hit points... which means, that you depend a lot on the group - there's very little chance for a magic-user to survive alone.

The cleric is much better, balancing fighting capacities, and healing spell. But the magic-user are getting powerful only at high levels, and then they're cool to play.

Teleportation, telekinesis, mind control, Wall of fire, Fireball, Magic Shield, they are all pretty impressive spell you won't get until 8 or 9th level.

The good thing about Magic-user though is the mystery that the game master can add to a campaign.
When introducing a complex item, a relic or a scroll, who's going to read and analyze it ... the barbarian ? the thief (also he could in some ways) but usually it's the magician, and then the quest can start.

In "the Hobbit" basically the character of Gandalf, represents that mysterious figure able to save the day, but who is missing most of the time, because he's out there doing some weird quests in parallel, I'd say that Gandalf is a perfect high level magic-user but a non player character. Because he's part of the story, his moves are actually having a consequences on the campaign's plot.

He is the enlightened one - working hand in hand with fate (represented by the game master).
“When society reaches a stage where property confers rank, where wealth becomes the only source of virtue, passion the sole bond between man and wife, falsehood the source of success in life, sex the only means of enjoyment, and when outer trappings are confused with inner religion…then we are in the Kali Yuga—the Dark Age.”
—     Vishnu Purana, Book 4, chapter 24.
N. PabloTsunami: For its significant power and mystery the magician may be feared and also fear himself and his potential to do harm. Key words to understand this archetype are, intuition, knowledge, confidence, action, creation and mystery. More else clear examples of magician characters are Merlin from druidic legends, Gandalf and Saruman from Tolkien, Lord of the Rings saga, J.K Rowling main character Harry Potter and Neo of the Matrix trilogy.

Illumined Mind

I woke up feeling that I had reversed somehow - that the inside me was the outside and the outside was inside.

It felt weird beyond measure.

We are all one

That thought alone needs to sink down for a bit.

What does that mean ? We are all one ?

When I see a billboard of "sexy lingerie" it's me the universe showing to myself a sexy part of me wearing sexy underwear to arouse myself ?

When I see a copyright notice, it's me the universe preventing me to use my own creation for my own benefit ?

When I resist the urge to give a 2$ to a homeless me ; I'm resisting self-love.

When I give 20$ for a piece of me materialized as a gift, I will offer to myself later - to enjoy seeing on me the good emotions of receiving a gift ?

When I'm in School learning a language I already know, to be able to speak to another expression of me in a foreign country ?

When I'm writing a blog for another self (hello self) who is also trying to figure out that we are all one.

When I'm asking a guru-me about a burning question related to me ; and I'm wondering if the answer I will give to myself is relevant, since I feel that I might not be able to receive it right now, because of my current state of awareness.

I'm currently typing on a keyboard-me, reading on a monitor-me, projecting thoughts from a collective mind, that reader-me already have in his collective mind, but is reading now in an effort to re-awakening his own remembrance of this fantastic revolutionary idea that we are all one!

Gradually

During a role playing game, we are all sitting around a table, one is setting up the game direction, the others are playing, pretending to be in the game master's universe - which is in his mind.
The players and the game master are living in an illusion, and following very basic combat, physical rules are able to perform actions, and feeling emotions (fear, hope, anger, sadness, greed, compassion, etc ...) over hours of what would look like a conversation.

Momentum

Video credit : Sudevi (Ma Nithya Sudevi)

Today is December, 21st - that particular day when people would supposedly ascend.

What does that say about us ? We are so thirsty, desperate for something new for some real changes, that we are able to buy anything that goes into that direction.

Now that this day is almost over, I can feel a bit disappointed, because unfortunately no change (or at least no drastic visual changes) happened.

I have a little confession though, I was pretty sure that something would happened, just because we were so many to believe that something would. Like a self proclaimed prophecy.

The lesson is that if I want change, I'll have to make them myself ; you know the hard way...

There's no shortcuts. Or is there ?

The Wheel of Life

We are all one, what we seen in other is ourselves.
The wheel of life, is ourselves.
Learning to love ourselves, is the key to love others ; because there's no others, there's just ourselves.

Start to see your surrounding as a gigantic flow of energy, a infinite soup of molecules and we are floating in it, we are part of it - the brain is acting as an interface trying to find limits and draw frontier, to separate zones. But when the brain can let go, because I'm out of body, dreaming or experiencing alternate state of consciousness - the dictature of the brain is no longer active.
The Wheel of Life - Aesthetics of Suffering and Salvation: The Buddhist Wheel of Life symbolically represents how all sentient beings, who have not practiced the Dharma and liberated themselves, are bound in a cycle of existences whose very nature is suffering. The symbolism is depicted through a series of pictograms that are meant to act as a powerful mnemonic device for both the serious practitioner and the layman. The Old Masters prescribe that one should think about this diagram and focus on it day and night so as to never forget its meaning. According to Shri Dharmakirti "One should intently and seriously contemplate the meaning of this wheel. If possible, one should put up a pictorial representation of it, if necessary in solitary retreat, until its significance sinks in. Once this happens, the wish to be free of this mindless suffering is spontaneous and constant. An apt comparison would be with a sick man, who while suffering from a chronic painful ailment, discovers after a thorough medical examination that the reason for his illness is some regular component of his diet. Such a person would immediately try to remedy the defect."
