Funnily enough it's not like 2012 is supposed to be linked with THE END OF THE WORLD, or THE APOCALYPSE, or  THE ARMAGEDDON ...

We better get busy with some more important news, like the Stock Market and APPL share reaching 600$.

Or who is going to be the next candidate for presidency, or that the ending of Mass Effect 3 really sucks.

No, we're not doomed, at all ; surely the medias would warn us, surely all the tax money we pay are invested in research and development program to prevent such disasters to happen...

Exactly, Awkward_Facts isn't exaggerating, and you're answer is great. However, if 1859 were to be repeated it could take months to get telecommunications back up, and a few years to get back to where we were before the incident. Might not be such a bad thing though. Maybe the US and EU unemployment situations would finally be addressed as tons of money is thrown up to fix the damage ASAP, thus requiring a giant, albeit temporary, army of workers.
